Idea Sharing for Better Caring

Building Health Innovation Ecosystems Using Enterprise Social Networks

“It’s time for health care professionals to take on the redesign of their work,” Jim Champy

“I’d like to see a thousand flowers bloom, or maybe a hundred thousand. Innovation at any scale is the way to improve health care,” Rosabeth Moss Kanter

The need for greater innovation in today’s health care ecosystem is clear and widely accepted. US health care costs are currently 18% of GDP and rising rapidly. If costs continue to grow at historical rates, the share of GDP devoted to health care in the United States is projected to reach 34 percent by 2040, according to White House figures. The United States ranked number 1 in national health care spending per capita in 2006, but was 39th for infant mortality, 43rd for adult female mortality, 42nd for adult male mortality, and 36th for life expectancy. Indeed, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), acting through the newly created Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, has developed $1 billion grant program—the Health Care Innovation Challenge Grant Program—to spark greater innovation for health care cost containment and quality improvement.

The BPI Network is teaming with the private and public sector leaders to create a “Health Innovation Ecosystem” (HIE) that will embrace the use of Enterprise Social Networking to drive greater innovation across the nation’s healthcare delivery system. Idea Sharing for Better Caring is designed to activate social collaboration and enable purposeful crowd innovation within the healthcare ecosystem on a community level. Meaningful ideas and inspirations in each participating healthcare provider will be nurtured, cultivated and graduated using a dedicated business social networking platform (hosted in the cloud) that will be individually customized and localized with CMO Council sponsor, partner and member assistance. A CMO Council affiliate, the Business Performance Innovation (BPI) Network, will also mobilize its C-level member and partner resources as well.

The HIE platform will support all forms of social interaction, collaboration and workgroup coordination to pool and develop ground breaking ideas that have significant clinical, financial, operational and compliance value. It will also have mobile and contest components to maximize participation, reach and commitment.
